Northwest Minn. man sentenced to 3 years for striking boss with hammer

GRAND FORKS — An East Grand Forks man will spend three years in prison for hitting his former boss in the head with a hammer during a robbery.
Kyle Joseph Duray changed his plea to guilty Monday, Dec. 3, during a Grand Forks District Court hearing. Duray worked for Randy Trostad’s roofing business but was fired Aug. 28, 2017, according to an affidavit for his arrest.
Around 10:45 p.m. that night, Duray went to Trostad’s home and began arguing with him, according to court documents. Trostad turned to walk away at the end of the argument, but Duray attacked him by hitting him in the head with a hammer.
Trostad fell down, unconscious and Duray continued to punch him in the head and chest multiple times, court documents said.
Duray then took an envelope with $1,300 cash from Trostad’s pocket, prosecutors said.
The hammer caused a large, painful knot behind Trostad’s left ear where he was hit. He had difficulty hearing afterward, the affidavit said.
